This short course on Leadership for Internationalisation, developed by Cardiff Metropolitan University, provides the theoretical background and operational tools for Presidents, Vice Presidents, Directors and Programme Coordinators in the Philippines to develop and to implement a strategic plan for the Internationalisation of their universities.

The programme is a collaboration between the British Council and the South Manila Education Consortium (SMEC).

The component programmes are designed for senior leaders to develop leadership skills to help enhance the internationalisation of their universities. Each programme will introduce the range of opportunities afforded by internationalisation, and assist in incorporating internationalisation into the university’s overall vision, mission and strategic planning as well as with the implementation of an international strategy, including transnational education. Each will explore the components of successful international partnerships. Those attending will be assisted in identiifying the key features of a strategy and implementation plan for development which will be appropriate within their institutions or departments. Each programme is also designed to help participants develop their leadership skills so their university can function effectively internationally. 

The suite comprises 3 individual programmes. One for Presidents, one for Vice-Presidents and one for Directors and programme coordinators. The objectives are the same but the material is treated in a way that is appropriate to the different roles and experience level of the 3 cohorts.

About the speakers

Prof. Mohamed Loutfi

Professor of Internationalisation, Pro Vice-Chancellor (International), Cardiff Metropolitan University

Mohamed Loutfi is a Professor of Internationalisation and Pro Vice-Chancellor at Cardiff Metropolitan University with responsibility of Partnerships and Internationalisation including the development and implementation of the University's Internationalisation Strategy at home and abroad. Before joining Cardiff Met, he held the posts of Senior Lecturer, Principal Lecturer, and Head of Transnational Education at the University of Sunderland, UK.

Mr. David Lock

Cardiff Metropolitan University Consultant

Mr. David Lock was appointed as Director of International and UK Projects at the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education in October 2007. He developed the international work of the Foundation to include over 30 countries and a range of engagements from scoping studies through development workshops for senior leaders to longer term development programmes and partnerships with UK and other universities.

Dr. Colin Powell PhD

International Strategy, Cardiff Metropolitan University

Dr. Colin Powell's current role relates to informing and implementing Cardiff Metropolitan University’s International Strategy. At the School level, he has responsibility for developing an internationalisation culture, facilitating mobility, the recruitment of international students, the establishment of franchise arrangements, supporting international research and enterprise activity, partnership management, enhancing student experience and quality assurance.

Prof. Brian Morgan

Professor of Entrepreneurship, Director of Creative Leadership and Enterprise Centre, Cardiff Metropolitan University

Brian Morgan is the current Director of Creative Leadership and Enterprise Centre (CLEC) at the Cardiff Metropolitan University, which has delivered the Leadership for Head Teachers programme – a transformational leadership programme for schools in Wales. Before returning to academia in 1997 he was a Senior Adviser to the UK Government and worked extensively for the EU. He currently advises the Welsh Government and recently produced the Business Rates Wales Review (2013).

Mr. AbouBakr Fathalla

International Engagement Manager, Cardiff Metropolitan University

Aboubakr Fathalla is responsible for developing and maintaining Cardiff Metropolitan University’s wide Transnational Education Network (TNE) and enhancing it to cover a wider scope of partnerships. 

Aboubakr holds a BSc in Business IT, a MSc in International Business, an MBA in Project Management, as well as preparing for his PhD in leadership and strategic planning.  He is the project manager for several capacity building projects stretching from Europe to the MENA region.
