Dual Degree

The Master of Arts in Design Education (MADE) explores the relationship between critical design thinking and critical pedagogy to uncover new areas for learning and teaching practice. The programme revisits and reinvigorates pedagogical practice through engagement with diverse fields of enquiry such as social justice, 21st-century education, and sustainable futures. It builds on pedagogical understanding developed through a foundational course, the Postgraduate Certificate in Designing Education (PGCDE) offered by Miriam College.

The course allows individuals from any discipline to examine educational issues and concerns using the tools of design thinking and innovation management. In so doing they are able to formulate new knowledge about the development and delivery of areas of school growth such as curriculum, instruction, administration, faculty development, and even physical plant improvement. Through practice-based inquiry and study attachments at the Goldsmiths’ campus in London, the course enables students to adopt an enabling consciousness for learner-centered, innovation-driven, and sustainable education as it relates to the goals of national development and global connectedness.

Every student in the programme will be required to develop a school-based innovation project that will help them articulate a concrete and viable solution that has lasting impact on student learning and community development. Compared to a traditional thesis, this practice-based enquiry project immediately provides the opportunity for the student to function as a catalyst of education innovation. 

How to Apply

1. Applicants should have completed a bachelor’s degree in any field of study with a minimum average of B, 2.0, or 85%.

2. A completed application form with all associated requirements must be submitted. Link to the admission page here.

3. Complete a 1,500-word essay, the topic of which the applicants may choose from a published list.

4. Accepted applicants must submit proof of having passed the language proficiency test of IELTS (International English Language Testing System) prior to pursuing MADE (with the test not more than two years old at the start of their MA). The required overall score is 6.5, with 6.5 in writing and no minimum score less than 5.5.

5. Applicants will undergo a panel interview headed by the Dean of the College of Education.

For CHED Scholars only: At the point of application for the CHED TNE Scholarship, you will need to specify the period of time you will spend in the UK, as this will impact on the funding you will receive for the overseas study attachment. The options are 3 months (minimum), 4 months, or 5 months.

Retention and Progression: PGCDE holders must have obtained a cumulative quality point average (CQPA) of at least 3.5 to proceed to the MADE.
