The Rivers of the World exhibit was inaugurated at the city of Marikina last 29 January at the with Vice Mayor Jose Fabian Cadiz in attendance as well as some of the students who took part in the programme, their respective teachers, Marikina Division of Schools OIC Superintendent Dr. Helen Grace Go and city councilors.
“The Rivers of the World programme aims to encourage children to think about the important role that rivers play in all of our lives. An important feature of the programme is that it brings together children in schools from the UK and other countries, using art as a medium for exploring and sharing ideas." Nicholas Thomas, Country Director of British Council Philippines, said in his opening remarks.
The Rivers of the World exhibit is the flagship art and education project of The Mayor’s Thames Festival, delivered in partnership with the British Council. The project offers six schools in each selected non-UK country the opportunity to be partnered with a UK school and work with a local artist to produce high quality digital artworks with groups of students. The artworks were displayed as part of the Totally Thames Festival in London in September 2015 and are now part of the permanent exhibit in Marikina.
